Negotiation, Collaboration and Conflict in Ancient and Medieval Communities: Christian Krötzl, Katariina Mustakallio, Miikka... Negotiation, Collaboration and Conflict in Ancient and Medieval Communities
Christian Krötzl, Katariina Mustakallio, Miikka Tamminen
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Focusing on forms of interaction and methods of negotiation in multicultural, multi-ethnic and multilingual contexts during Antiquity and the Middle Ages, this volume examines questions of social and cultural interaction within and between diverse ethnic communities. Toleration and coexistence were essential in all late antique and medieval societies and their communities. However, power struggles and prejudices could give rise to suspicion, conflict and violence. All of these had a central influence on social dynamics, negotiations of collective or individual identity, definitions of ethnicity and the shaping of legal rules. What was the function of multicultural and multilingual interaction: did it create and increase conflicts, or was it rather a prerequisite for survival and prosperity? The focus of this book is society and the history of everyday life, examining gender, status and ethnicity and the various forms of interaction and negotiation.

Infirmity in Antiquity and the Middle Ages - Social and Cultural Approaches to Health, Weakness and Care (Hardcover, New Ed):... Infirmity in Antiquity and the Middle Ages - Social and Cultural Approaches to Health, Weakness and Care (Hardcover, New Ed)
Christian Kroetzl, Katariina Mustakallio, Jenni Kuuliala
R4,159 Discovery Miles 41 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume discusses infirmitas ('infirmity' or 'weakness') in ancient and medieval societies. It concentrates on the cultural, social and domestic aspects of physical and mental illness, impairment and health, and also examines frailty as a more abstract, cultural construct. It seeks to widen our understanding of how physical and mental well-being and weakness were understood and constructed in the longue duree from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The chapters are written by experts from a variety of disciplines, including archaeology, art history and philology, and pay particular attention to the differences of experience due to gender, age and social status. The book opens with chapters on the more theoretical aspects of pre-modern infirmity and disability, moving on to discuss different types of mental and cultural infirmities, including those with positive connotations, such as medieval stigmata. The last section of the book discusses infirmity in everyday life from the perspective of healing, medicine and care.

On Old Age - Approaching Death in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Hardcover): Christian Krotzl, Katariina Mustakallio On Old Age - Approaching Death in Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Hardcover)
Christian Krotzl, Katariina Mustakallio
R2,716 Discovery Miles 27 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recent research into old age and dying in the premodern world has examined not only the demographic aspects of ageing populations but also the social role of aged people. Nonetheless, there has usually been a neglect of the end of life and attitudes towards death and memory. These topics have seldom been discussed in the same volume. The end of life evokes questions. What does it mean to grow old? What happens when one dies? How does one cope with old age and death? These questions were as relevant for individuals and societies in earlier periods as they are in the present. The aim of this collection of articles is to cross the boundaries that have traditionally isolated different time periods and scholarly disciplines from each other. The volume focuses on aging, old age, and death from Classical Antiquity to the Middle Ages. The purpose of this book is to approach these themes from an interdisciplinary point of view in the longue duree. Instead of concentrating solely on demographic issues it takes a much broader view, considering attitudes towards ageing, dying, death, and memory. The volume, with its diverse topics, cuts across traditional scholarly barriers and will provide valuable analytical tools for further studies on the subject.

The Dark Side of Childhood in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Paperback): Katariina Mustakallio, Christian Laes The Dark Side of Childhood in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Paperback)

R968 R882 Discovery Miles 8 820 Save R86 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines conceptions, ideas and habits connected with children in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, focusing on the "dark sides of childhood" in the pre-modern world. The authors investigate the long-term attitudes of people, as well as ruptures in habits and customs. The book is divided into three parts. "Unwanted" deals with parents who were unable to bring up their baby and handed it over to other people or the cruel whims of destiny. "Disabled" addresses what we would label as children's illnesses since disability was a concept largely unknown to ancient people. "Nearly Lost" examines demons, viewed as destructive forces with the ability to destroy children or young people, sometimes by literally sucking their lives away. The articles are written by an international team of specialists from Belgium, Finland, Italy and the United States and were presented at conferences organised by the research project "Religion and Childhood. Socialisation from the Roman Empire to Christian World," funded by the Academy of Finland (2009-2012, directed by Dr. Katariina Mustakallio), at the University of Tampere, Finland.
